Supporting orthopaedic care in Northern Malawi

Orthopaedic care in the Northern Region of Malawi is underfunded and minimally supported by the international community.

Our aim is to try and provide support to those working in Orthopaedics in this difficult and busy environment

Trauma has been left behind in terms of international funding, recieving less than 0.1% of the amount donated to other causes such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis.

But trauma is a huge cause of both death and disability in Malawi. Lack of funding means that many cases remain untreated.

There is only one orthopaedic surgeon for over 4 million people.

In Scotland we have over 130 orthopaedic consultants for a population of just over 6 million.

Pressure on services means that delays are inevitable. This poor little guy had to wait three weeks with his arm up in traction before getting his elbow fixed. This kind of operation would be undertaken within 24 hours in this country (even with NHS pressures!).

So who are we?

Project Kuyenda is a collaboration between orthopaedics in Scotland and orthopaedics in Malawi. Our aim is to provide moral support, expertise, money and equipment to help the local Malawian team. Luckily the local team are fantastic - they just don’t have the equipment and staff they need to keep up with the demand on their service.

There are a range of difficult cases to treat

The roads in Malawi are not the safest, so road traffic accidents are a constant source of terrible injuries. These would be difficult enough to treat even in optimal conditions. A lack of the necessary kit makes it even harder, and delays in accessing health care make infections very common.

Project Kuyenda Ball

16th March 2024

Prestonfield House
Edinburgh

We can’t do much without funds. To help raise these we are organising a ball at the beautiful Prestonfield House. This should be a great night with food, drink, a band, dancing, games, auctions and prizes. The proceeds all go directly to Project Kuyenda - so just by attending you’ll be helping care for injured patients in Mzuzu.
